This weekend has been an enjoyable one. On Friday night, me and Lisa had a birthday meal with the community. I received a very very large bar of chocolate in the post from my brother, Simon. 5kg of Cadbury's chocolate! It's an average person's consumpation of chocolate in six months, according to the label! The ascetic Buddhist life I lead! Me, Sudana, Laura and Philip spent Saturday shelling walnuts, brought back from the retreat centre in France. Sunday was a quiet day, and I spent most of my time cleaning the Meditation Hall and doing other domestic tasks.

Engaged Buddhist group in shock corporate sponsorship deal.....

Well at least the Cadbury brand has a good Quaker heritage! :-)

Welcome to the blogosphere - shall look forward to hear how things are developing. See you soon.

Hello Sally et al,
It was lovely to see you all at the Buddhist House!! I'm currently a student on the Buddhist Psychology Distance Education Course which I think I will enjoy very much. I was moved to leave a comment because, as much as I enjoy chocolate, I'm increasingly trying to find vegan alternatives, and here in New Zealand there are some brands of chocolate that are made without milk or animal products. You may wonder what I'm going on about!! Well I'm very much against the ill treatment of animals in any shape or form and this I think accords with Buddhism. The problem with a lot of chocolate is that the production of it involves animal cruelty. Unless labelled otherwise milk and milk products come from factory farmed cows. They are factory farmed in the sense that not very long after calves are born they are separated from their mothers so that the mother cow milk can be used primarily for human consumption. Male calves - "boby calves" - in New Zealand (and I think the same may be the case in the UK and the States)of only a few days old are loaded into trucks headed for the abatoir to be killed. The 'by products' yeilded from them are then used for a variety of human uses. I am trying more and more to be vegan and think that a truely Buddhist diet needs to be cruelty free and hence vegan rather than simply vegetarian. I would be happy to engage in conversation about this with anyone who is interested.
Kind regards,
Mary Murray
